Getting Personal (and some talk about food)

Okay, so, I don't get too personal on this blog much. At least, I don't think I do. Mainly because my life is boring and the things worth telling would just make you realize how twisted I am. Sooo... I don't go there much.

Unless it starts to affect my blogging and internet presence.

And lately it has.

For the past few weeks (since before Christmas), my internet comings and goings have been pretty infrequent. The reason is because I've been getting migraines every. single. day. It's gotten to the point where I'll hurry up and do what I can in the morning and spend the rest of the day with my eyes closed and me lying on the couch.

I've been convinced I'm dying. Seriously.

I finally made an appointment to see my doctor, which I will do on Thursday. In the meantime, I'm trying to diagnose myself. One theory I have is hypothyroidism. I don't know if migraines are a part of it, but hypothyroidism runs in my family and I've had a bunch of other symptoms that go along with it. I'm constantly tired and any time I try to exert myself, I get sick and I need to sleep. I woke up the other night because I stopped breathing. You know, stuff like that.

So, why am I telling you this? Besides the fact I've been AWFUL as far as keeping up with blogs and my friends, I've also come up with a new theory which has meant a pretty drastic change to my life.

Some things you don't know about me:

I love to cook, and I like to cook from scratch. I like to make my own cheese, butter, candles, jellies. I like to can my own foods, garden, everything. So the theory I came up with has to do with food. I think my body is intolerant to carbs and starches.

The reason I think I'm intolerant to that stuff is because last saturday I tried my theory out and only had eggs, cheese, meat, and fruits and veggies. But then I went to a party that night. And as is typical for all parties, the main foods were carbs and starches. That whole day I was feeling awesome, but after eating the party fare, I was sick again. Horribly, horribly sick. My stomach actually balloons so much, I look like I'm six months pregnant. My husband laughs because it looks so ridiculous. But believe me, it's painful.

So yesterday, I went on a shopping spree to completely restock my pantry cupboard and refrigerator. I'm so excited! You should see my pantry cupboard. I'm seriously showing it off to guests now. They laugh at me. Because I think eating real, healthy food is important, I'm thinking of sharing some recipes on the blog. What do you guys think? Would you be interested? Maybe on Wednesdays or something?

I also bought a food processor and a coffee grinder so I can make my own almond flour! Hehehehe! I can't wait! Because I can't really live without cake. I love cake. Just not cake made out of nasty, processed "enriched" flour that makes me sick.

By the way, just to prove to you why I think I'm right, by this time (because this is such a long post), I would have felt the first little inklings of a migraine, and I don't.

Coincidence? I think not. :)

  1. Sounds like you might have celiac disease. Basically, people with celiac are gluten intolerant, which means a lot of the carb-rich, nutrition-poor foods such as bread, flour and pasta (basically anything made with wheat) gives them an allergic reaction. Definitely talk to your doctor about it! I hope you feel better!

  2. Interesting, but at least you figured out what it was. I hope everything is better from here on out.

    1. So far I'm feeling great! And now that I know what it is, I don't crave any of that stuff anymore.

  3. So sorry to hear of your migraines. Ugh, not fun. Perhaps you could be reacting to gluten, which is a REALLY common food allergy these days (or else more commonly diagnosed). I'm allergic to gluten; it usually hits me intestinally, like the bloating. If that's the case, rice flour is okay, and corn or corn flour. Wheat and rye and barley--no. Oats may have a trace. Write to me for more info if you want!

There is a blood test that tests for food allergies, and may be worth doing. Good luck!

  4. And as Brandi said, you could test for celiac disease, which is a sensitivity to gluten (don't eat whole wheat! it's not just nutrition-poor foods), and actually destroys the villi of your intestines. But then, I suspect your reactions might be more intestinal. I'm gluten-intolerant, but I'm not celiac. Whew.

Take care of YOU and DEMAND results. and please share recipes!! i could REALLY cook a lot healthier !!! take care!!!

  7. I hope you get to feeling well soon. I have almost totally eliminated gluten from my diet because I have Crohn's disease and gluten is hard to digest. Any recipes you'd care to share would be wonderful.

  8. My sister in law a few years ago had to make drastic dietary changes due to migraines and intestinal issues. She didn't end up as positive for any diseases (that I know of) but she did have to cut out all preservatives, nitrates and nitrites, and way back on caffeine. No issues with gluten though. (just the additives in regular flour and other products) Hopefully you will only need to make tweaks to your diet rather than drastic sweeping ones. But since you like to cook and do things from scratch anyway, it would probably bug you less than it would me. (I can cook, but I don't really like to.)

  9. Guess what? I wake up gasping for breath and I have migraines. I don't know if this is what's causing yours, but for what it's worth... According to my doctors, I wake up gasping for breath because my sinuses, etc., are so swollen due to allergies that I can't breathe if something like a pillow, sheet, etc., covers my mouth during the night. The migraines often happen because the swelling causes enough pressure to start a migraine because I'm susceptible. (And I can't take decongestants to relieve swelling.) A vaporizer and antihistamines help. Hope that helps.

    1. That sounds awful! I don't think that's my problem (at least, I hope not!) because I don't have allergies (that I know of). I do know that gasping for breath is a symptom for hypothyroidism as well. Oh dear. My poor doctor is going to have fun with me on Thursday! Hehehe! :)

  11. I'm sooo sorry you've been sick! I hope the change in diet helps you... my family has seen some vast health improvements by increasing their intake of fruits and vegetables... my dad switched to doing lots of juicing in addition to a healthier diet in general and has seen some really positive results. Hope your doctor can help you figure out what's wrong!

    1. You know, besides being gluten intolerant, I think I was essentially starving myself. Most of my food has always been wheat/carb related. I'm very picky about texture so I just avoided eating fruits and vegetables because it was easier to have a sandwich or pasta. Since I've tried out my theory, I've had SO MANY veggies and fruit and nuts. I know this probably sounds corny, but I actually do have the energy of a teenager again. It's absolutely amazing.

I don't have a juicer, but I have been grinding up some fruit and veggies in my blender. Very yummy!

and! seriously, follow through with the real doctor and don't be a stubborn bumpkin about it.
and! yes! em-like recipes are a good idea. i want to hear all about sitting on the egg, raising the baby chick, slaughtering it, defeathering and butchering it, etc... to get some scrambled eggs! :P

  15. Glad you figured that out. Sounds like a food allergy if you were getting migraines. I can get them from wine. Another factor, since it's winter, make sure you're drinking enough water.
