Welcome back! We're still going through the A to Z Challenge and today I'll be talking about another great love of mine.
Isn't that a great author picture?
Sitting all scholarly on a high-backed chair with a book on his lap.
Makes me wish I had something that debonair.
Okay, so C.S. Lewis is kind of my hero. He wrote what moved him in order to teach something important to his readers. He's a legend. And his words continue to affect the world YEARS after his death.
That's amazing. And a blessing. And I pray on a day-to-day basis that I'll have a fraction of his success.
What person today doesn't know about Aslan? Or Narnia? Or The White Witch?
What child hasn't cherished his words?
And what hero has molded who you are today?
I have a deep and abiding affection for C.S. Lewis. I don't agree with everything he says, but you can't get around how insightful and eloquent he was. The first Lewis I ever read was THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, not long after I became a Christian. I then tried to read as much of his theological works as I could. I was in my mid-20s before I finally got around to reading the Narnia books!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice, Emily. :)
I read my first C.S. Lewis book in my twenties! Unfortunately, I never thought I'd like his Narnia series because the cartoon movie looked so absolutely horrible. I'm glad I got past that and was, obviously, very wrong.
DeleteI mean, how could you not mention C.S. Lewis?
ReplyDeleteExactly. *nods sagely*
DeleteLewis is absolutely my hero. More than almost any other people in history I imagine him being my best friend.
ReplyDeleteOh, absolutely! I'd love to sit down to tea and have a conversation with him.
DeleteLewis is pretty amazing. I didn't discover these stories until a little later; otherwise, I'd have opened every single wardrobe I ever saw as a child. ;)
ReplyDeleteRight?? Oh my goodness, I can't even imagine how many times my parents would have had to rescue me because I'd gotten trapped inside. :)
DeleteYou know, I didn't read the Narnia books until I was an adult. As a teenager I read his Space Trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. I also read the Screwtape Letters. I didn't know about Narnia until much later in life...
ReplyDeleteYou'd think that being my hero and all, I would have read all those other books (except Screwtape Letters--I did read that), but I'm ashamed to say I haven't yet. And my book budget is so low! Maybe I should start a "buy books for Emily" fundraiser.
DeleteI love CS Lewis too.
ReplyDeleteI have a huge mirrored wardrobe in my living room, and you wouldn't believe the number of children who want to look inside. I always let them and I say, "I've always wanted there to be a way to Narnia through it too, but there isn't." (I keep a crystal dish of candy inside to help soothe the disappointment--the children always like that.)
You are brilliant!! Kids must absolutely love going to your house.
DeleteOh I just love C.S. Lewis. I read the Narnia books in middle school. Then in high school I read The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and Mere Christianity! I'm a big, big fan of his :)
ReplyDeleteAren't they all amazing??
DeleteYou're so right, his Narnia books are as much a part of the cultural landscape as TV! A wonderful writer and a great post for C.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Thank you! :)
DeleteI loved the Narnia books when I was a child. I was greatly encouraged to read his books as he was born locally - but to be fair no encouragement was needed.
ReplyDelete<------Jealous!!!
DeleteThe Chronicles of Narnia are some of my favorite children's books. Great post!
ReplyDeleteMine too! :)
DeleteThat *is* an awesome author photo. C.S. Lewis isn't a personal hero of mine, but I agree, I would love to have a fraction of his success. I guess I better get my butt in gear and start working harder, right? LoL
ReplyDeleteYes! Get to working!
DeleteThis is me giving you positive support. :)
Truly, one of the greats. The only author I can say has influenced me more is Tolkien, but only just. Both have a special place in my pantheon of great authors.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post, and a great blog. I look forward to seeing more during A to Z!
Why that could be me right now, with the high backed chair and the book on my lap, only in my case you'd have to add a pipe.
ReplyDeleteI've loved his Narnia books since I was a kid. I never went hunting for my own way there via wardrobe, but I traveled there every time I opened the pages.
