What Would You Invent?

One of the best things about writing science fiction is the world-building.  Every tech, every possibility you've ever dreamed of comes to life on paper.

As readers, we've seen laser swords, self-aware robots, hover crafts, floating cities, and weapons so powerful they can make a star explode.

But what kind of tech would you invent?  What do you want to see in the real world?  Would you build a city that could reproduce its own buildings so that it could grow like a forest?  Would you create vehicles that could transport a person from one place to another instantaneously?  What would you do?  And what do you wish scientists would focus on?

Go ahead!  Be an inventor for a day!

  1. What a COOL photo! Love it. I'd like to see something kinda like that photo--something artistic yet functionally sci-fi. And YES, a vehicle for instantaneous transportation would be so great, the next best thing to Harry Potter apparating (my daughters and I always are wishing we could apparate LOL).

  2. SELF. CLEANING. DISHES.

This is probably a reflection of my lack of dishwasher/hatred of cleaning, but wouldn't that be so awesome? You wouldn't even need a dishwasher. You finish eating, tap the plate twice, and voila, put it away clean.

    One can dream, right?

  3. I'm very big into nano-tech at the moment. Makes so many things possible. Instant recycling or biodegrading on command. Color changing clothing. Dental work in a soda. DNA mapping in seconds. Self cleaning dishes. Ü Organ printing for transplants. Solar power paint. So much more.

Yes, there is a scary dark side to it too that I will explore in my novels.

  4. Self-cleaning clothes! And self-dusting furniture.

Solar-cell paint exists, by the way. It's just too hard to make marketable for now. But that day will come, and then it will be bye-bye electricity bills. :-) I can't wait.

  5. Yes, I know. I research nano-tech constantly. They are even working on paint that will absorb other types of energy, background radiation and radio waves. Exciting stuff.

  6. Oh! I've been thinking about this lately as I write my YA sci-fi novel. My first instinct is to say, "Time machine!" But a transporter would be vastly awesome as well. :)

  7. I would invent one of those machines where you step on a conveyor belt and it automatically washes you, dresses you, and does your hair every morning--like in the cartoon TV show, The Jetsons!

  9. Adore that green city from the pic!
I think I would focus on beautiful descriptions of innovative cities and building, and on the psychological changes humanity made in a sf book.

As a translator I must tell you that sf is difficult for translating onto other languages, exactly because of the new words sf writer invent in their books. I'm currently translating SPACE SHIP TROOPERS and it's difficult for that very same reason.

  10. Thanks apsiring_x! I'm not sure if you will be disappointed by my blog or not. It isn't about my writing, sci-fi, or fantasy, but funny stories with silly drawings. I think it gives my writer friends a break from the stress of constantly thinking about writing and hopefully makes them laugh.

Maybe I'll dedicate a few to sci-fi soon. Those drawings would be fun.

Sorry, Emily, for hijacking the comments...

  11. Charlie--No, no, no! I love that you hijacked the comments! It's so great when my readers start talking to each other!

Plus, I love your ideas. We definitely need some tech like that.

  12. Thanks Emily. It is a little crazy how much brain power I dedicate to nano-tech, quantum computers, wormholes, and trying to visualize multiple universes shimmering alongside one another like noodles in soup with strange creatures swimming in the space between or skimming the surface of our universe like water skeeters. Yep...I'm a nerd.

  13. My current WIP features a civilization whose technology is all based on biological organisms: buildings constructed from the two-story shells of giant snails, partially hollowed-out bodies of enormous millipedes used as “living transportation,” leaches that inject antibodies during medical procedures, etc.

World building is a fascinating topic. Some time ago, I wrote several blog articles about the subject:
